The two species of elephants alive today are the African elephant
and the Asiatic elephant (the African elephant is the larger of the two).
Man is, by far, their greatest threat.  Join us in celebrating this gentle giant.

In the same way that we can be identified by our fingerprints,
the unique patterns of veins in an elephant's ears can be used to identify them
.

This animal's shrinking habitat (due to mankind's "progress") is a huge threat.
Elephants are the largest land mammals remaining on earth,
and they spend two-thirds of each day eating.
It takes a lot to fuel these great beasts!
They consume up to 500 pounds of vegetation and 50 gallons of water daily.
Elephants continue to grow throughout their lifetime so their size is a good indication of their age.

Elephant tusks are basically elongated upper incisors which
continue to grow throughout the life of the elephant.
Killing elephants for their ivory tusks almost caused their extinction.
